New Pieces for MAN Gallery

Here are a few of the pieces that came out of the kiln today that I will be putting on the new display that I built for the Mountain Arts Network Gallery.  I glazed most of the pieces in my new favorite glaze combination.

New Display

I love building things out of slabs of clay and wood. Constructing pieces out of slabs of clay is similar to building things out of wood.  However, you have to use slip instead of nails.   I just finished building a new display for the Mountain Arts Network Gallery in Lake Arrowhead, CA. I still have to put the undermount lights on the bottom of the shelves so that the pieces will pop.  I used birch wood for the shelves and red wood for the trim.  I am very happy with how they came out.

New Contemporary Vessels

These are a few new pieces that I have done for a new display.  I wanted a more free flowing contemporary line or look to them.  I throw the sides without a base.  Then when the clay has set up a little I remove the pieces from the bat and alter them.  When I alter the sides I let the piece tell me what it wants to do and where it wants to bend.  After altering I attach the side to the slab base.

Handbuilt Vase

This is a vase that I recently took out of the kiln.  To create this piece I first make templates out of tar paper which I use to cut out the slab pieces.  After I cut out the pieces from a large slab I assemble it using foam as support.  The white satin glaze is a Hamada glaze.

Sea Urchin Bowls

After finding some sea urchin shells in Fiji I decided to use the spots on the shells as inspiration for hole patterns on some new bowls.  After trimming the bowls I drill out the holes freehand with various size drill bits.  I like the way they came out.....
